Sony Awesomely Announces They’re Making A Spider-Women Animated Feature

Everything’s coming up Spider-Verse. Though we’re still a few weeks away from the release of Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, Sony seems to think it’s going to be a hit. So much so, that they’re already moving forward on spin-off sequels. THR has heard the studio wants to invest in a Spider-Women animated feature. One that focuses on three generations of female web-heads.

The new feature will focus on the further adventures of Spider-Gwen, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld in Into the Spider-Verse. Who will join here isn’t concrete, but names floated out there are Spider-Girl, Madame Web, Silk and Spider-Woman. All of which would be fantastic characters to see up on the big screen. Lauren Montgomery (Batman: Year One) has been tapped to direct, most likely due to her success with DC animated films. She’ll be working off a script from Bek Smith (Zoo).

Regardless of the direction they take, it should be lots of fun. Sony clearly wants to diversify their options and looks to be a good place to bring in more outside viewers. This would be great on its own, yet Sony has even more up there sleeve when it comes to Spider films.

In addition to the Spider-Women project, they’re already hitting the ground running on a sequel to Spider-Verse, with Miles Morales at the forefront. That picture will be directed by Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender). As a sign of a commitment to quality, Wonder Woman 1984 scribe David Callaham will write the script.

Though many new faces are going to be apart of these projects, some unseen faces behind the scenes will remain the same. Amy Pascal will serve as producer, while Phil Lord and Chris Miller look to be involved at some creative capacity. All we can say is to expect many Spider-Verse animated films for some time to come. At least until they stop making money.
