Netflix Gives ‘Iron Fist’ The Axe

On Friday the surprising news broke that Iron Fist, the Marvel backed super hero series, was being cancelled by Netflix.

While the show struggled to find its footing in the first season, a few minor tweaks to formula found it better received the second time around. Critics also praised the new addition of villain Davos, Sacha Dhawan. Heck, even the last episode featured further tweaks that would have seen things go in a more fun direction. The second season dropped September 7th, showing the streaming giant wasn’t wasting any time in making their decision.

Marvel Television also released a brief statement to Deadline, concerning the decision:

“Marvel’s Iron Fist will not return for a third season on Netflix. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is proud of the series and grateful for all of the hard work from our incredible cast, crew and showrunners. We’re thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we’ve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on.”

Now, that last sentence there reads as rather interesting. Of course this isn’t the full death of the character, as they’ll live on in comic book form. What it does signify is that the future is wide open as to how they may pop up in the future. The most obvious way would be making an appearance in, an as of yet unconfirmed, second season of The Defenders. While that future hangs in the balance, the other shows seem safe, for now.

The other big way Danny Rand could live to fight another day, would be on a different streaming service altogether. Marvel’s parent company would be just the ticket in that case. Disney’s putting the final touches on a service that’ll already be home to shows headlined by Scarlet Witch and Loki. Iron Fist may be small potatoes compared to them, but it makes sense to want to bring all properties under one roof.

Where ever he ends up, it seems like this isn’t the true end of the road. What do you all think? Do you agree that it was time to cut ties with Iron Fist?
